The market
Every Sunday, from 07:00 to 14:00 hours, in winter and in summer, come rain or shine, we can find in Santa Maria del Camí’s Plaça Nova (New Square) one of Mallorca’s biggest traditional markets. At this market, with over 500 pitches, we can find farmers, craftspeople, sellers of clothing and sellers of food. We can find fruit, vegetables, legumes, seeds, animals, ironmongery, shoes, bags, clothing, perfumes, baskets, flowers, earthenware pottery, flowers, fruit trees, etc.
It’s one of Mallorca’s best markets, for its size, the variety of products, and the fact that there are many farmers there selling their own produce like in a farmer’s market. There’s a section of the market where locally-made art and craft items are sold; another section devoted to organic produce; and one that supports the local economy through the sale of second-hand goods and restored furniture, and handicrafts.
The origin of the market is uncertain; perhaps it goes back to the days when the country folk from neighbouring localities who came to Mass in Santa Maria brought their produce with them to sell in the village square.
“Sa Fira” (The Fair)
Santa Maria del Camí Fair deserves a special mention of its own. It’s held on the last Sunday in April of each year in Plaça Nova, which is where the market is held. It’s one of Mallorca’s biggest fairs, with a great diversity of wares and thousands of visitors. The usual Sunday stalls are supplemented by animals, displays, places to eat, attractions etc.
